Here’s another week over and time for another to begin. I’m pretty much a couple hours away from seeing Iron Man 3 and hoping that it’s so amazing I almost automatically can’t like any other summer movie because it gets the honour of being my first for summer 2013, but let’s be honest… temper those deep dark sultry feelings for a man in a robot costume.
Anyways, this is what I watched this week gone by:
PAIN & GAIN (2013)
I’m finding more and more that I want to agree with certain critics that I like and when I see a film that I don’t feel the same way they do I feel bad. Part of it is that I honestly want to like this movie, the other is that I feel that they’re right because I can see where their feelings and interpretations of the film are logical based on the context of the film. Sadly though I just left this movie not enjoying it as much. I do feel, this may be more my wanting to like and to see what others see, that the film may grow on me with more viewings. But for now all I can say is that it’s a great effort by Bay in trying to break out of his shell somewhat but I don’t think he pulled it off that much here.
OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN (2013)
This week they released a full trailer for Roland Emmerich’s White House Down, which will be out this summer, and now I’m just pissed that I thought Olympus would be any form of good. It’s an overall boring action movie that’s too dark to enjoy a lot of the action and just feels too serious to be fun.
BRINGING UP BABY (1938)
Where were you all my life Katherine Hepburn? This movie is gloriously funny and so tightly composed it’s hard not to love it. I want her doing more copper voices please.
THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955)
This is a film that feels very dated in it’s own way but at the same time still very good. Read my full review here.
GIRL MODEL (2012)
There are some industries which just seem horrible because of the implication of what a job is, modelling is one of those and this film is disturbingly haunting because of how it shines a light on that world. It’s weird to see that we judge and empathize with the scout in the film as it progresses.
FISH STORY (2009)
One of the best films ever. I immediately want to write a post comparing it to Cloud Atlas discussing it’s themes and ideas. I will wait a couple weeks on this for CA to be available for me to revisit, but that’s the plan.
REWATCHED
I’m having a bit of a Joss Whedon week with my revisiting of episodes of Dollhouse and Firefly, but most importantly I rewatched Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. I still love this film, at 45 minutes long I love this tiny musical.
Also, for TUMP things, I rewatched Finding Nemo & Jurassic Park (still awaiting the IMAX rerelease here in Trinidad, should be sometime in August). Summer movies don’t have to be dumb, they can also be amazingly fun and poignant.
Revisiting for the first time since TIFF I saw To The Wonder, and I may no longer be in the love camp here. Here’s the first film from Terrence Malick which I’m willing to go on a limb and call a verifiable bad.
