X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE [MOVIE REVIEW]

wolverine-shrieber-jackman

Hugh Jackman returns to reprise his role as Wolverine from the X-Men films to tell the origin story of the lost tough man with claws. Victor Creed [Liev Schreiber] and Logan are brothers and have been together throughout the years and through all the wars, as we get to know through a really lame opening credits montage. After years of fighting Logan decides that he’s had enough and he just walks away. Unfortunately William Stryker [Danny Huston] and Victor aren’t going to let him leave so easy, and eventually Logan has reasons to come after them for blood.

Let me start this out by letting everyone know that this movie takes elements from the Origin comic book by Paul Jenkins, Andy Kubert and Richard Isanove but isn’t a direct adaptation of the book, which is pretty obvious from the trailers. The movie, like many other Marvel films, takes from numerous sources to make its own origin story for the creation of Wolverine. So please don’t go into this movie with expectations for any one specific version of Logan’s origin story, go with a clean slate and leave room for the creators of the film to rewrite whatever they feel needs rewriting.

So I went into the movie expecting a dumb action film and I have to say, no matter how much I wanted to hate the movie it did deliver on that. I do believe a lot of the graphics for the movie were poor at best, especially when Logan had just received his adamantium claws. They looked fake to say the least, the CGI looked more believable in X-Men [2000], and that took me out of the movie for a while but I got over it. The movie gave me a lot of throwaway action sequences which varied from plain average to straight up kick-ass. I especially loved the final fight sequence between Weapon XI and Wolverine, the choreographer did well to incorporate all the powers that Weapon XI had inherited into the fight to make it grip you and want to just shout with awesomeness deep down in your voice.

My main problems with this movie are problems that I knew I would be having before I saw a trailer. This movie had some horrible dialogue, even though there were a few good one liners here and there, and some of the most ridiculous characters. I almost burst out with laughter during the boxing match between The Blob/Fred Dukes [Kevin Durand] and Wolverine, the hilarity kept escalating until the final moment of that fight when I couldn’t keep it in anymore. Just to let you know sharp Wolverine claws poking out of boxing gloves looks hilarious.

One character I have failed to mention so far is Deadpool/Wade Wilson [Ryan Reynolds]. I must say I liked the character and the scenes he was in were fun and filled with great action. However, these kinds of things make me worry since I think Ryan Reynolds is such a great actor and from his roles in films like Waiting… and Van Wilder I think that he is a fun actor to watch in comedic films. I think Ryan should be doing better films at this point but only time will tell whether he’ll be a truly great actor or just another guy who takes all the cheap and easy roles. I’m also sad that he only got two scenes in the film and only the opening sequence is the one where you really get that fun feel from his character.

Well I’m guessing you can tell what my final thoughts on this film are at this point. I must say I didn’t hate the movie but at the same time I didn’t find it to be any great action movie. However, I did find myself enjoying the movie a ton. In the end I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves the X-Men movies and or any dumb action flick. And just to let Gavin Hood know, Agent Zero [Daniel Henney] has been done already in Equlibrium, and that movie was a billion times better than this one.

IMDB says 6.9/10

Rotten Tomatoes says 37%

I say 6.0/10

PS. The official X-Men movie Hierarchy -> X3 < Wolverine < X-Men < X2

SPOILERS – AFTER CREDITS

Also just to let everyone know. The Super-secret after the credits ending I saw was Logan in a bar in Japan. I’ve read of an ending where you see Weapon XI reaching for his decapitated head and make a sound. Are there any others? If so please post in the comments with spoiler warnings.

This is my blog. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My blog is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my blog is useless. Without my blog, I am useless. I must fire my blog true. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my blog and myself are defenders of my mind, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.

    I know you're not saying you love the movie or anything, but I still disagree with you wholeheartedly on this one. I found myself with terribly low expectations heading into this movie and it still managed to massively disappoint me. I even could have excused it if I thought the action was any good, but I didn't think it was. The plot made no sense. Even though X3 wasn't the greatest movie, it still felt like there was something at stake, and it was SO much more ambitious than this garbage. There's nothing at stake in this movie. There are mutants getting killed off left and right, but they're not given enough time for the audience to even begin caring about them. And the action was so highly stupid. (Gambit gets knocked out, then all of a sudden he's on a roof, then he's struggling to get on the roof to get away? WTF.) I feel like the last action scene could have been really cool had the effects not been so awful. Don't get me started on how Wolverine loses his memories either.

    Aw, I really enjoyed the opening credits and wars montage – I thought it was awesome to be perfectly frank.

    I'm not overly familiar with the origin story from the comic so I didn't take it to task for that. I have to admit I loved the Canadiana bits quite a lot – made me want to cheer in the theatre :)

    re: Adam "There’s nothing at stake in this movie."

    It's a prequel. There never *is* anything at stake in a prequel because you know how it will end, it's only a matter of how it gets there.
