Q&A: THE TWILIGHT SAGA

Note: I’ve decided to start a weekly column where I will answer any questions that you have for me about film, or my relationship with film. This is the very first, make sure to send in your questions. You can ask me anything from a specific movie that you want to see me write about to a general theme in movies. Enjoy and make sure to comment.

I didn’t know that I hadn’t made my feelings clear. There have been any occasions while discussing the films on the podcast I host and I even wrote a review for the second film, which I went to the theatre to watch and got one of my most entertaining theatre going experiences as I laughed as loud as my voice could handle at all the middle aged women eye-raping the children on screen.

Anyways @Reesy11 had asked me in this inaugural Q&A weekly post what my thoughts on The Twilight Saga and the upcoming Breaking Dawn.

So first, what do I think about The Twilight Saga? I do not like Twilight. I find the same level of enjoyment from watching these movies that I do from watching any painfully bad film. I laugh at the ridiculous script, the questionable acting and the ridiculous fans.

The truth of it is that I doubt I would be as harsh as I usually am if the fans would just realise that not only do they have a right to like it, but I have the right to not like it. Whenever I get into a conversation about Twilight it’s always with someone who loves it or hates it, never someone in between and as soon as the fans realise the polarizing effect that the franchise has on the world then it’ll be ok. The last thing I want to do is tell someone what they should or shouldn’t like, but at the same time it’s so normal for me to hear the fans talk about how they love the romance, then question after question I ask I eventually find that they’re just all about Team Jacob or Team Edward and about how many times they get to see their favoured guy take their shirt off.

Then the fan starts to talk about how they love the romance. Now, here’s some substance. The idea behind the movie is that these two people (debatable description) are in love, but due to the fact that Edward is a vampire they can’t consummate their love and Edward is therefore afraid of actually falling in love with her; so he prefers to just stalk her for the first half of the first movie. It’s dumb and not romantic at all. And if you’re looking for some films where the whole ‘taboo’ relationships theme is dealt with better I listed ten better a while back when I used to write for The Film Stage.

Next, what do I think about the upcoming Breaking Dawn? I’m sure it’ll not be a great movie, just like the rest of the franchise. However, with that said I do think that the films have progressively been getting technically better. From Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) to Chris Weitz (New Moon) to David Slade (Eclipse) the films have been becoming better. However, the problem is that no matter how  good a director you get to helm the movie it still has to tell the poorly acted and written story that’s been inherited from the first film.

I know that I get a certain sad and not very nice enjoyment from these movies and making fun of the fans, but that’s just how I feel. I feel that you (the rabid fanbase) are all wrong, and maybe if you were just a bit quieter about your love then we would be able to find a way to exist in this world with minimal bloodshed.

Without my blog, I am useless. I must fire my blog true. I will.
