PERSEPOLIS [INTERNATIONAL] [MOVIE REVIEW]

This film is the animated adaptation of a graphic novel by the same name. It is an autobiographical film [and novel] about a young Iranian girl, Marjane Satrapi (Chiara Matroianni), growing up during the revolution. She is a very open minded girl who believes in freedom, in a country that doesn’t offer it to women. She has to be sent away to France so that she will not be arrested over some argument with an official.

Here is another film that I have no attachments to its source material. So if there are any missteps that the film made when translating from novel to film I wouldn’t know about it [let me know in the comments]. However, I doubt there was much missing since the author of the novel also helped pen the script as well as direct the film [Marjane Satrapi]. She directed the movie along with French comic book artist Vincent Paronnaud.

This movie is one of the best 2D animated films I’ve seen in recent days. But that is an easy accomplishment with it possibly being one of the only 2D animated films I’ve seen this year. Ever since the emergence of Pixar; 2D animation has been scarce [and not that I’m complaining, but I miss it a bit]. So it was definitely refreshing to see a proper 2D animated film that didn’t come out of Japan. On that note, the animation style is amazing, and it definitely makes you want to keep watching. It made me think that this is perfect as a graphic novel because there were so many points while I was watching this movie that I wanted to take the picture and hang it up on my wall.

The story is something that is very informative and emotional. Everyone [outside of Iran] have a basic idea of the oppression against women and their restrictions from all sorts of things we [as western society] sometimes take for granted, but this takes us into how the country became this restricted nation. I think this is definitely something that most people should watch just so that they can get that part of the movie. Otherwise, unless you’re a fan of these “coming of age” stories, I wouldn’t really suggest it to you for a casual watch.

I really am not sure about what else to talk about here. The movie is worth it really if you’re in it for the story and not just the animation [even though that is awesome]. Mainly because with any gimmick that draws you into the theatre after the first fifteen minutes of it you get bored and start realizing the story [or lack of one]. The story here is a good one, but not exactly a highly entertaining one. I still think that you guys should give it a chance though, because I’m always a fan of these kinds of tales that lets us into someone’s life and perspective of something we already knew about before. It gives us something to think about and makes us find another reason to feel something about this world that is so far separated from us via this young girl.

IMDB says 8.1/10

Rotten Tomatoes says 96%

I say 6.5/10
