MOVIE REVIEW: GOING THE DISTANCE (2010)

Garrett (Justin Long) is a guy with a string of poor relationships that always seem to end because he never fully commits and Erin (Drew Barrymore) is a woman who dreams of being a reporter and has finally started to get her life back on track.  While Erin is in New York during her summer internship with a NY newspaper she and Garrett randomly meet one night.  With six weeks left with her time in NY the two of them promise that they’re not looking for anything serious, but come the day that they must part they realise that they don’t want it to end and then they decide to begin this long distance relationship that we get to join them in for the full runtime of the movie.

I went into this movie with understandably low expectations.  I’m a fan of both Long and Barrymore’s work over the years, but for some reason even though I like them as leads I felt like this movie may be one of those films that tries to subdue their natural comedic talent in order to make the movie as generic a Romantic Comedy as possible.  Fortunately for me I was completely wrong.  Not only was this movie honestly hilarious but it was also so raunchy that it almost felt like the script was written by Kevin Smith and directed by Judd ApatowBarrymore plays the most likeable just over 30 nerd chick that you’ll see all year on screen and Long is one of those guys who’s finally met the woman that he’s been looking for all his life.  Now Garrett is now Tom from (500) Days of Summer but he definitely tries his best to be one of those grounded boyfriends in a sea of overly sappy men that we see in romantic comedies every four weeks at the cinema.

As great as Barrymore and Long are in this movie what really stands out is the remarkable supporting cast.  From Charlie Day to Christina Applegate everyone gets a chance to shine.  Garrett lives with his best friend, Dan (Charlie Day), who is one of the funniest sidekicks that I’ve seen in a while.  Dan even shines even more when he’s together with Garrett’s other best friend who he works with, Box (Jason Sudekis), who plays the other friend who has this ridiculous 70s moustache that I wish I could sport.  Thankfully the great casting doesn’t end with Garrett’s crew; Erin’s sister, Corinne (Christina Applegate), and her husband, Phil (Jim Gaffigan), are just brilliant as these two people who are just looking out for Barrymore so that she doesn’t screw up her life all over again just for a guy.

No matter how you look at it the movie is honestly funny.  Maybe it isn’t the movie of the year, but it’s definitely more than just a fun time at the theatre.  I always talk about how you have to try and delay your significant other from cashing in that sappy pick of the week until there’s something really worth it; this is that pick.  So get your lady in the car and check out this movie for a great time for both males and females alike.

IMDB says 6.4/10

This is my blog. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My blog is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my blog is useless. Without my blog, I am useless. I must fire my blog true. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my blog and myself are defenders of my mind, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.
