HELL RIDE [MOVIE REVIEW]

The 666s have reformed and are back with a vengeance against the Victors. Pistolero [Larry Bishop], The Gent [Michael Madsen] and Comanche [Eric Balfour] lead the Victors in this bloodthirsty tale of deceit and revenge.

Now I have to say I had really high hopes for this movie for two real reasons: 1. Quentin Tarantino put his stamp of approval [which really doesn’t mean much but still], and 2. The redband trailer that premiered online about a month back was amazing and had that Grindhouse feel to it. First off, no post production editing to make this into a cheesy Grindhouse visual style movie, first disappointment; and secondly this movie didn’t need the Tarantino call in [except maybe so that Larry Bishop could cast Michael Madsen – who I’m sure sits by the phone every night waiting for QT’s call – and David Caradine].

The one thing I loved about this movie was the characters [which are to be expected of any Tarantino film]. They are all just so ‘cool’. Larry Bishop plays the “president of assholes” aka. Pistolero, the leader of the biker gang known as The Victors. He is like any master schemer in that he hides it from everyone what he has in mind for the plan, until the very end. Though you can see the frustration of having to deal with this character through Michael Madsen’s character [The Gent] due to his long standing in the group, you see the opposite from Balfour’s character [Comanche] since he is the up and comer – basically just happy to be there. I love especially the relationship between The Gent and Comanche, they have this almost brother-like relationship where they hate each other and then they make up and hate each other all over again. These are characters that people will be quoting lines from for time to come… “Look I’m an owl”.

I liked a lot of the cool factor to this movie. It’s like when you saw “Ocean’s Eleven” for the first time and you realized that you’ve entered a whole new world from the new lingo you had to become acquainted with. Here you have that again, you have these guys speaking a whole new language and even though it isn’t as cryptic as in Ocean’s Eleven, or as hip as in Juno, it is something that will sit with you and make you laugh after understanding what they were really saying after a second viewing or so.

What I wasn’t a huge fan of was the timeline confusion. Now I’m not sure how everyone else felt. But this movie at some points I wasn’t sure when or where I was, and sometimes they took me back and I don’t know why. A few quick flashback scenes felt somewhat redundant and unnecessary. Once in a while I complain about a movie lasting too long, but when you already cut your film down to roughly 80 minutes and some things still feel extra, don’t worry keep cutting.

Before I time out on this review I just need to mention how awesome Dennis Hopper was in this movie. I am a fan of his style of acting, especially in films like this. In the trailer you see the scene where he gets his boots pissed on by Comanche and that scene is one of the most hilarious in the film. He had all the best lines and the best end as far as I was concerned.

Overall it is a watch for anyone who likes the trailer, likes awesome characters and great immersive dialogue. But at the same time this movie is nowhere near perfect. It is fun though, so give it a shot.

IMDB says 5.6/10

Rotten Tomatoes says 11%

I say 7.0/10

Without my blog, I am useless. I must fire my blog true. I will.
