G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA [MOVIE REVIEW]

McCullen [Christopher Eccleston] is the head of a weapons corporation who has created the first warhead which can destroy anything using nano technology. The first set of warheads has been shipped off under the watch of best of the best of the American military, Duke [Channing Tatum] and Ripcord [Marlon Wayans]. The convoy is attacked by the Baroness [Sienna Miller] and the Joes come to defend it. This is where Duke and Ripcord are introduced to the team and find their way into the operation to help get these guys who are after the warheads.

I was so against this film when it was announced and even more when the trailers hit the net. The year raged on, and then after I stomached films like Dragonball and Legend of Chun-Li and then Transformers 2 I began to tell myself that it can’t get any worse. Well I’m here to say that it definitely didn’t. Being completely honest, this movie is a true fun filled popcorn summer flick. There is no other way to take this.

I think what is most interesting about this film are all the roles and the people playing them. Marlon Wayans is great as Ripcord and I loved Christopher Eccleston as this international man of business who was the head of some international terrorist organisation. But my absolute favourite character from this film has to be Sienna Miller as Baroness and can I say that she looks hot in leather. Sienna sold me on the role for ¾ of the film. There is one huge change I’d make with this movie and has to do with this character in the last ¼ of the movie, but to tell you what I would change is entering spoiler territory so let’s ignore that comment and just know that I didn’t like something about the end of the movie.

One relationship that definitely worked for me was the one between Ripcord and Scarlett [Rachel Nichols]. It was pretty cliché as the popcorn action relationship goes. It begins with guy being attracted to sexy woman, woman denying guy, then guy does something manly and they make many jokes skirting around the fact that she starts liking him then eventually we know they’ll eventually make numerous babies. I liked Marlon Wayans delivery of most of his lines; he definitely brought the fun, while on the other hand Mr. Tatum was really just a brooding serious Duke that made me wonder if anyone told him that he’s playing a role based on an action figure.

The plot for the film is definitely well set out, but at the same time doesn’t hold centre stage here. The action was fun and very cartoony at points. Which is a good thing because if anyone thought that they could make a sequence where two, more or less, regular soldiers put on some high tech cybernetic suits and are then able to run faster, hit harder and be anything they want to look real then you are stupid.

So overall I give this movie a fun filled two- hour pass. My only fear is that when they do, and they will, go and make the sequel for the movie they will take it totally over the top like Transformers did. However, for now I’ll just worry about my film critic credentials for saying that I liked this movie and just continue to think awesome thoughts as the Eifel tower falls over.
