GENERAL CONSENSUS: SALT (2010)

I’ve been trying to think of a way that I can return some link love for all those critics/blogs that I love to read.  Since I love reading reviews of films that I’ve seen what I’ll do is each week whatever new release that I review here I will post what I think the General Consensus of the movie is by posting short snippets of many reviews here.  Check it out below:

So here’s how this is going to work.  Since I want to create an average score for the film (like my own blogosphere only version of RT or IMDB) I will only count reviews that have a rating.  If your rating is letter graded then I will convert it using High School style grades (i.e. A = 9/10, B = 8/10, C = 7/10, D = 5/10, F = 3/10).  I’ll definitely mention other, non-scaled reviews, but they won’t be calculated into the overall General Consensus.

Directed by: Phillip Noyce

Written by: Kurt Wimmer

Starring: Angelina Jolie, Chewitel Ejiofor, Liev Schrieber

Release Date: July 23 (US), July 21 (JA)

The problem — and I’m trying to avoid spoilers here — is that we’re never given any sign of WHY she does the things she does. In a story full of double- and triple-crossers, she seems to have been chosen to fill her particular role arbitrarily. – Eric D. Snider from Cinematical

For anyone even remotely paying attention, the supposed great question of SALT is answered within the film’s first twenty or so minutes. Kurt Wimmer’s script neglects to build any tension regarding Salt’s identity, and the first act is only given any redeeming value by a highly improbable chase scene that is still damn good fun to watch. – Kate Erbland from Gordon and the Whale. Grade: 4/10

Scripted by Kurt Wimmer (Law Abiding Citizen), Salt digs plot holes Wimmer isn’t talented enough to climb out of. For those only out for a jolt of action and little fluidity from scene to scene will find this works, but if you’re looking for a little something more you will be left wanting.  – Brad Brevet from Rope of Silicon. Grade: C+ (7.5/10)

Here’s one of those movies we get so often where the names and occupations really don’t matter, the meat of the matter is that a badass individual is forced to go on the run and allowed to do all sorts of damage all over the place while reminding us that they are the smartest person in the movie. – Andrew from gmanReviews. Grade: 7/10

It’s gloriously absurd. This movie has holes in it big enough to drive the whole movie through. The laws of physics seem to be suspended here the same way as in a Road Runner cartoon. – Roger Ebert from Suntimes. Grade: 10/10

Our investment in the twists and the characters doing the twisting is founded upon sloppily inserted flashbacks in which Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) conjures up whenever the time is right. Flashbacks aren’t strictly relegated to character development though, they are also used for plot. – Jordan Raup from The Film Stage. Grade: 3/10

SALT actually gets quite a few things right. Namely, the fact that the film seldom takes its foot off the gas, and stays all action for most of its 100 minutes. The stunts are daring – though often implausible – and guessing how Salt will weasel her way out of a situation immediately becomes a lot of fun. – Mad Hatter from The Dark of the Matinee. Grade: 6/10

But it’s not just that Salt involves itself with completely fabricated set pieces that have little to no basis in the real world. Even with movie logic firmly instilled, the fragility of the characters in the film is staggering. No one seems to act as anyone in such a situation would act. There are instances of clear negligence even on the part of Noyce. – Jeremy Kirk from FirstShowing. Grade: 4.5/10

Avg. Score: 6.0/10

This is my blog. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My blog is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my blog is useless. Without my blog, I am useless. I must fire my blog true. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my blog and myself are defenders of my mind, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.
