A TOWN CALLED PANIC (2009)

Its Horse’s (Vincent Patar) birthday and his housemates: Cowboy (Stephane Aubier) and Indian (Bruce Ellison) have forgotten.  So in a panic they figure out exactly what to get him for his birthday.  Indian and Cowboy decide to build Horse a barbeque; however they do not have enough bricks.  So they order some bricks.  Unfortunately in an unexpected coffee mug mistake they accidentally order fifty-million bricks, as opposed to just fifty.

I didn’t know what to expect from this movie.  It came highly recommended and I knew it was using this weird stop-motion animation style that I don’t believe I’ve ever seen in film before.  When we watch stop-motion films we’re used to films such as Coraline, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Fantastic Mr. Fox.  This film however pans away from the characters to give you this broad stage for the film, which gives an odd play pen feel to the visuals.  It feels almost as if we’re watching the results of a five-year-old playing with his toys.  Oddly enough it’s a good visual decision on the part of the filmmakers because the story itself feels like the result of a five-year-old playing with his toys.

The story itself is one to behold.  It’s pretty good that the film is only 75 minutes long, because based on how the plot of this film moves along if it were any longer it would be complete overkill.  I’m not a fan of this sporadic storytelling where every time you get to a location/point the writer feels the need that he has to immediately introduce some new element that forces you to move out of that area and therein keep the plot moving so quickly that you never have time to register what happened before.  And herein lies my biggest issue with the movie.  It requires you to enjoy the tale of a five-year-old, which if I learnt anything from watching Ponyo is that I don’t do that.

As wacky as the character of Cowboy and Indian are, I just can’t find this movie entertaining.  There are a couple of moments where the animation was ridiculous enough that I chuckled and where Cowboy and Indian were stupid enough that a breathed heavily so as to assure that I didn’t pass out from over enjoyment, but it just isn’t enough.  I’m already willing to give this movie special treatment because it’s definitely something that you don’t see every day and if you’re willing to buy into the story then you will absolutely love this movie, but it just isn’t for me.

IMDB says 7.5/10

Rotten Tomatoes says 87%

I say 4.5/10

Without my blog, I am useless. I must fire my blog true. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my blog and myself are defenders of my mind, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.
