WHAT I’VE BEEN WATCHING: JULY 29TH – AUG 4TH

Hmmm… what can I say about the week passed? The Olympics are ongoing and that’s always a good place to start. While below you’ll see a lot of movie watching ongoing, the Olympics continue to amaze me from GB’s recent loss in penalties in Football, to Russia’s display in Judo to Jamaica’s recent win in the Women’s 100m, there’s always something happening in sport that will keep me engaged. Look to Usain Bolt this coming week guys.

However, regardless, movies still keep me occupied. The biggest movie related news, re: me, I guess is that I’m officially booked and ready for Toronto in September as I’ll be enjoying TIFF this year front and center. If you haven’t caught one of my direct/indirect referneces on twitter so far this past week I’m psyched. I look forward to seeing a lot of the films already announced for the upcoming festival and more importantly getting a chance to meet a lot of my fellow bloggers/critics from the frozen north – some of whom I’ve had the great opportunity of talking to whether it be to guest on my podcast, guest on theirs or talk for an interview piece on this site.

So please endure my impatient countdown as TIFF arrives and here’s my week in movies below:

FIRST TIME WATCHED

THE LORAX (2012) – beautiful animation and some great musical work, but not the greatest film, though it does play well into the Dr. Seuss style.
THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS (2012) – fun little movie, but not exactly a masterpiece of claymation cinema. Few great jokes, and that monkey (while underused) is always hilarious everytime on screen.
BERNIE (2012) – Jack Black and Matthew McConaughey are both fantastic in this film, but I want to say it would’ve been better as a complete documentary.
BATTLESHIP (2012) – What a horrendous movie with so many things about it I found hysterical. Ironic viewings at your own discretion.
LOUIE (SEASON 1 & 2) – A show I started out having massive problems with turned out being pretty fantastic. Amazed at what Louis C.K. can do with a small budget show like this.

REWATCHED

MOUSEHUNT (1997)“He’s Hitler with a tail. He’s “The Omen” with whiskers. Even Nostradamus didn’t see him coming!”
DETENTION (2012)“Mullet beats pony-tails.”
LA HAINE/HATE (1995)“How you fall doesn’t matter. It’s how you land!”
THE IRON GIANT (1999)“it’s bad to kill, it’s not bad to die”
THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON (2008)“Your life is defined by its opportunities… even the ones you miss.”

THE COUNT

117 First time watches (47 from 2012); 74 Rewatches; 191 Total Films

SONG OF THE WEEK

What’ve You Been Watching?

This is my blog. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My blog is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my blog is useless. Without my blog, I am useless. I must fire my blog true. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my blog and myself are defenders of my mind, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.
