TOP 5 WORST FILMS BASED ON VIDEO GAMES

So to tie in with the feature review which will come later in the week of Max Payne I will be giving you the Top 5 Worst Movies that are based on Video Games.  Usually I’m listing the best, but since most people will agree that we are yet to get one good movie based a video game, much less to be able to name five would not only be difficult but a heart wrenching lie.  So here we go

FIVE

Mortal Kombat [1995] was one of the many games that made my younger years so enjoyable but when the film came out I was only disappointed.  The movie took our favourite characters and decided to make them pick a side, I always read it as a free for all and now I’m looking at tag team fighting and to save the world.  This game made me think of Anime’s like Yu-Yu-Hakusho where everything came down to a tournament and at the end win or lose its all for bragging rights to say that you’re the biggest and the baddest, just like when you invited ten of your friends over to play.

FOUR

Wing Commander [1999] destroyed my love for movies when I was young.  I used to play this game all day and loved all the space battles flying around and shooting all sorts of people, and when I heard of the movie I was jumping for joy.  Back then I was not aware of the suckage indicators of Freddie Prinze Jr. and Matthew Lillard, and I went.  I can honestly say I’ve never had my heart broken as much as this film.  I wish I could go back in time and never even liked this game.

THREE

In The Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale [2007] takes up the middle spot here.  I know when you saw the theme for this list you guys were looking for the Boll, well here he is.  I sat through this movie last year and wanted to physically gouge out my eyes.  I’m not a big fan of Statham post Snatch, but one thing I can’t say about his films is that they aren’t entertaining, and this wasn’t.  The movie reminded how bad an actor Ray Liotta and Ron Pearlman really are.

TWO

Super Mario Bros. [1993] starred Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper.  Here is the video game that if you ask anyone who doesn’t know anything about video games they can at least name this one.  Mario is Nintendo’s icon character – i.e. whore – that has been used generation after generation after his debut in a Donkey Kong video game in arcades.  This movie had basically no resemblance to the game, and even though they would at times throw in random things, a mushroom, a bomb, yoshi, nothing made sense at any moment.  This movie is so bad it has become laughably bad at this point looking back.

ONE

Street Fighter [1994] starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, the muscles from Brussels.  The movie is based on the video game by CAPCOM.  Here is my all-time video game fighter love from my early years, I was the one telling all the Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat fans to f*^# off and go back home to their mommies.  Guile was my favourite character and to hear the action star Van Damme himself was going to play the role, how could it not work.  Until of course the movie decides to have the face-off between Guile and Bison and then we have to see one of the worst fight scenes ever.  Please America, leave it to the Japanese.

This is my blog. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My blog is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my blog is useless. Without my blog, I am useless. I must fire my blog true. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my blog and myself are defenders of my mind, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.

yeh, wen street fighter was done i was like what?? But as a 9 year old kid i liked mortal combat when it came out. and if you were deeply criticizing that movie at 9 i think you had a sad childhood… lol

    LOL Good one Simon.

All in all "Street fighter" is the suckiest. This is but another example of hollywood saying, "Alright lets make something sensational-seeming by dashing in somebody they know – and hope for the best!"

For those who know the game, they would know that the movie mostly ignored the original concept, hastily added a few things – and went for a laugh.

    Yep it's the suckiest!

well its so sad tho, all you had to do is beat the game and at the end of street fighter, every one has a little cartoon story. they coulda used ATLEAST ONE of those stories …… watevs. Metal Gear Needs a movie. or if someone can show me a site that has an AVI of the finished game including the clips in between, i would sooo watch that

  4. Dan

Dude! Super Mario Bros. is bad but in the greatest way! Dennis Hopper for God's sake! And watch it about Statham and Ron Perlman. Both of those guys are brilliant. Crank 2: High Voltage I am confident will cement Statham as the Humphrey Bogart of this generation (joking, of course, kind of).

What a great web log. I spend hours on the cyberspace reading blogs, about tons of different themes. I have to first of all give kudos to whoever built your theme and intermediate of all to you for writing what i can only describe as an astounding post. I honestly believe there is a skill to writing articles that only very few posses and honestly you got it. The combination of enlightening and upper-class content is decidedly highly rare with the king-sized amount of blogs on the internet.

What about Bloodrayne, Doom, Silent Hill or even the Resident Evil series (which were a little better than average.)
