Klaatu [Keanu Reeves] lands on earth along with a huge unknown organic and mechanical being that is only referred to as GORT. When Klaatu lands in the middle of Manhattan the entire US Army is there to greet him along with a group of top scientists, including Dr. Helen Benson [Jennifer Connelly] who feels that we should not completely fear this alien. Leon Kauffman [Bradley Cooper] is an aspiring photographer in New York, and he is out on assignment to get some gritty pictures for a showing. He comes upon an interesting subject, Mahogany [Vinnie Jones], who is a butcher who rides the late night trains in the subway.
