MY TOP 20 FILMS OF 2011

 10.13 Assassins (dir. Takashi Miike)

If you’ve seen Kurosawa’s masterpiece, Seven Samurai, then you already know the basic plot of this movie. However, what you may not know is how much more improved the action and the drama of the film is. If you throw in a truly vile antagonist and give us thirteen of the most badass samurais as well as a large (almost) forty-five minute chunk of climactic action sequence after sequence then you will get in return 13 Assassins. A glorious brilliantly filmed action movie that I doubt can be repeated anytime soon.

9. I Saw The Devil (dir. Kim Ji-Woon)

Starring Byung-hun Lee as one of the most badass protagonists and Min-sik Choi (from Oldboy) as one of the most badass antagonists we’re given a near three hour long battle between these two forces that drags on as meant to be torture and we see the role of the “Devil” switch back and forth throughout the movie.

I was particularly harsh on the film the first time around (in a lost episode of TUMP) but after revisiting it I can say that I was wrong and it is fantastic to attempt to endure the violent battles of these two enemies.

8. Project Nim (dir. James Marsh)

In recent years I’ve become a particular fan of documentary filmmaking. Before I wanted all the bang of the blockbuster, but now I’m very pleased to sit down and just have you tell me an engaging story.

So when the director of Man on Wire decided to look into the life of the “first” chimp to be tested to see how similar and different we are from them psychologically by having him live among humans from birth and be taught to speak sign language. The documentary definitely eventually gets around to the idea that as valid as this question is scientifically is it worth what it does to Nim eventually. While this treatment at time isn’t humane, does that matter since the subject isn’t human?

7. The Guard (dir. John Michael McDonagh)

The brother of writer/director Michael McDonagh (In Bruges) decides to give me a spiritual sequel to In Bruges with Brendan Gleeson playing the most badass and entertainingly racist small town Irish police officer that happens to have to team up with an FBI agent who’s in town for an alleged drug deal that’s about to happen.

If you’ve watched enough movies, and specifically films dealing with police chasing down drug deals, then you know what to expect. This film does that, but does a great job of highlighting all of those moments we don’t see and admitting that those movies exist. My favourite example is a scene where Mark Strong bribes off the police and these small town people, so excited, asks him if “it’s all there” only to get the best movie response to a dumb question.

6. Contagion (dir. Steven Soderbergh)

Horror films main purpose is to frighten you. Usually they do this with ghosts, zombies, demons and psychotic intruders. However, not many decide to ground themselves in reality with the notion of a widespread epidemic of a virus that we can neither treat nor contain.

Soderbergh creates a massive story of how the world would truly be affected if this ever happened. Taking a look at the press, the scientists working for a cure, the origin point, and even the government all making me want to go home and by a lifetime supply of Pure All. It’s fantastic.

Andrew Robinson

This is my blog. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My blog is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my blog is useless. Without my blog, I am useless. I must fire my blog true. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my blog and myself are defenders of my mind, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.

      Which 5?

I love Contagion… it's calculated look at what would actually happen is mind blowingly crazy and just made me walk out of the theatre trying best not to make human contact…

      Soderbergh is awesome :)

      • Marshall and the Mov

"Contagion" is severely underrated.  I'm glad to see it getting some love – it just missed my 10.

Strangely, I've seen most of the movies you list that you haven't … but haven't seen many of the ones that charted with you.  I guess I must not have a soul because I found "Senna" to be very dull after the first 45 minutes.

        • Andrew Robinson

glad to see someone else have some love for Soderbergh's viral film…

I'm also happy that you're willing to admit you have no soul, saves me the time of doing it for you. :P

          Senna is awesome.

Which of my list have you yet to see?

  1. CastorTroy

Very interesting list Andrew! I haven't had a chance to see The Guard or Senna yet sadly. I liked 13 Assassins but felt it didn't spend enough effort/time to make us care more for most of the 13 assassins.

  2. Ryan Fernand

Thanks for mentioning The Ides of March.  The film has been so overlooked recently even though it is easily one of the better films released this year.  It does have a "noir-ish" feel at some points.

I really like the top of your list.  Drive is a film that just missed my top 10 list and The Muppets is in my top 10.  I definitely have to check out Senna now.  I have heard nothing but raves.

  3. Tsunayoshi Sawada

    Opens List
Does Not See Transformers 3, Breaking Dawn Part 1, Evangelion 2.22, MI: Ghost Protocol
    Silently Cries

But honestly, how shocking my number 1 pick isnt even one of the 20, let alone most that I saw this year (beyond Contagion) is listed.

Our movie tastes are not parallel.

  4. threeguys onemovie

Damn Andrew thats a big list of films.  I picked a top 3 ;-)    My favorite film hands down was the film you selected as #1 Drive.  Head and shoulders above the rest of the films we reviewed this year.

    • Andrew Robinson

as I kept working to widdle down the list for the end of year, I kept finding more and more movies I felt needed to be championed… and yes Drive is up there, but Senna came close to beating it… someday I'm sure I'm just going to call it a tie.

  5. Wilde.Dash

Your top 20 is making me sort of wish I'd just gone the extra mile and rounded up my usual 15. A quarter of the way through watching Senna, so far so good…!
