Somehow my mind wants to enter into the realm of “pelvic sorcery” jokes, because honestly guys I’m not mentally over Guardians of the Galaxy. The summer is officially over and it’s time to look ahead to the next few months of Oscar discussions and compelling dramas that try to highlight issues and anything that we find important in our world. I’ve been reading some pretty good buzz on this one coming out of Sundance this past weekend and the trailer looks fantastic. In the last few years I’ve been coming around on horror films and this one seems right in that sweet spot that all the Derickson’s and Wan’s are hitting for me right now.
Jason Bateman has been an actor I can never quite peg down to be honest. He has this off-kilter way too nice a guy dad in Arrested Development, and after that he always seems to play these comedic roles that almost asks him to be as unfunny as possible. He’s always played the proverbial butt of all the jokes in his films I find. Here however he’s continued to play that same wrong end of the stick guy, but he owns it. He owns his own weird thing in doing a children’s spelling bee on technicality and it just looks so amazingly right. He has the right brand of asshole written for him, so I’m down.
What do you think of the ‘Bad Words’ Trailer?
In case you haven’t noticed, one of the greatest action films of the last decade is being given a sequel and ohh can’t I wait to see it this year. It’ll be debuting at Sundance (sadly without me attending) before getting a theatrical release in March in the USA; which means I’ll see it on VOD/Blu Ray sometime in September I hope, because I can’t see my local cinema playing a foreign film with subtitles ever.
Have I told the world how much I adore The Raid? If I have I hope you forgive me in resorting to hyperbole, but it is the be all and end all of action cinema that is post Jackie Chan, Jet Li & Matrix American action films. Instead of making the grandness of scenes (like in Batman) take over we return to the simple kung-fu ness of action films and I’m so happy to see it’s return. Please make Gareth Evans make this into the next Police Story franchise films… and never stop casting that dude who was Mad Dog in the first film.
Anyways, here’s the trailer:
