A Movie Pitch by Me

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

So over the last week Anomalous Material (a really awesome blog) had this great event where we all participated in The Hollywood Fantasy Draft (I’ll let you figure it out).  It was a blast.  I spent ten rounds picking and choosing who would fit a film that I’d love to see one day.  However, it’s time for me to take that film that I see everytime I close my eyes and explain it to everyone else on paper.  This is the final stage of the event – The Pitch. 500 and Still Going: Five Must See Films

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

I started this blog a whole of two years and six months ago.  I’ve been known to go on sabbatical every so often, but generally I try to keep everyone up to date with my ongoing  cinematic adventures.  I’ve met a few people across the internet that I think I can consider friends, had some laughs and enjoyed myself.  I’d like to hope that a lot of you reading this are having fun with it as well.  I’m sure a good percentage of you out there who know me personally stare in bewilderment at my constant blatherings wondering why the hell I think I matter.  However, since I find it almost useless to address those individuals, since you’ve obviously missed the point of the endless exercise, I will continue with what I was saying before.  So I’d like to take the time right now to thank all the readers, listeners of my podcast and followers on twitter and facebook who make me feel like I’m actually better than I really am at this writing/critiquing/internet thing.

Anyways a couple days ago I realized that I was coming up to my 500th post on this site and I sent out a tweet (on the twitter) asking what you would all like to to write about.  I got few responses, but I guess the most interesting response I received was a request for me to talk about some of my favourite movies of all time.  So since that’s way too much work to try and go through and actually try and rank all of my favourite films, here’s an impromptu list of films I think are perfect movies and people need to see: (more…)

Actor of the Week – Val Kilmer

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

This is the weekly feature where I feature an actor and discuss three of my favourite performances by him/her.  Feel free to make suggestions for upcoming weeks in the comments for actors for me to feature here.  This week I will feature Val Kilmer.

Val Kilmer is an actor who’s seemed to be a part of every kind of cinema that you can imagine.  He’s done the horrible 80s teen movies (Real Genius), he’s done the amazing role that should’ve landed him a Golden Globe nomination (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) and he’s been the teen heartthrob that all you younger ladies want (Top Gun), but for some reason he’s never gotten a Golden Globe or an Oscar nomination.  What makes him even better in my eyes is that he never seems beneath poking fun at himself by doing a completely over the top ridiculous role, like in Bad Lieutenant: Pot of Call – New Orleans.  So he’s this week’s Actor of the Week:

Here are three of my favourite performances from Val Kilmer: (more…)

Actor of the Week – Cameron Diaz

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

This is the weekly feature where I feature an actor and discuss three of my favourite performances by him/her.  Feel free to make suggestions for upcoming weeks in the comments for actors for me to feature here.  This week I will feature 4 time Golden Globe Nominated actress Cameron Diaz.

Cameron Diaz strikes me as one of these actresses who was told all her life that she’s pretty because she’s blond rather than anything else.  However, I like her now and then because she’s not afraid to be silly.  Every once in a while she surprises me and gives a great dramatic performance.  Now I definitely don’t see her as a possible Oscar winner, but definitely an actress that is loved and for good reason. Top Ten Characters Who Just Can’t Miss

Monday, May 17th, 2010

One of the things that people love in films, especially action movies, is ridiculousness.  One of the most ridiculous things that’s made its way into our action films of today is every once in a while when we get a character, usually the leading man, who just never seems to miss the target.  Here’s my top ten list dedicated to those characters: (more…)

Actor of the Week – Nathan Lane

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

This is the weekly feature where I feature an actor and discuss three of my favourite performances by him/her.  Feel free to make suggestions for upcoming weeks in the comments for actors for me to feature here.  This week I will feature 2 time Golden Globe Nominated actor Nathan Lane.

Nathan Lane isn’t really the top level actor that everyone knows by name, but he’s definitely one of my favourites because he’s one of these really charismatic and musically inclined whenever he’s on screen.  I actually found it funny how easy it was to pick my favourite performances from Nathan Lane‘s filmography since most of his roles are minor/second-lead roles.  I do hope he gets more roles in some upcoming musicals because he needs to keep singing.

Here are my three favourite performances from Nathan Lane: (more…)

Actor of the Week – Scarlett Johansson

Friday, May 7th, 2010

This is the weekly feature where I feature an actor and discuss three of my favourite performances by him/her.  Feel free to make suggestions for upcoming weeks in the comments for actors for me to feature here.  This week I will feature 4 time Golden Globe Nominated actress Scarlett Johansson.

Scarlett Johansson is one of these new wave actresses who have created a niche character for herself.  She’s played numerous roles thusfar in her career, amassing thrity feature length films to her filmography already after only debuting in 1994, sixteen years ago.  She seems best in these youthful slightly roles which seem to lack emotional variation.  One performance that personifies this idea is her BAFTA winning performance from Lost in Translation where she just seems lost for the entire film and just decides to follow Bill Murray‘s character around Japan.

Anyways here are my three favourite performances from Scarlett Johansson: (more…)

Actor of the Week – Al Pacino

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Here is another new weekly feature for gmanReviews.  Make sure to comment and let me know what you think of it.

This is the weekly feature where I feature an actor and discuss three of my favourite performances by him/her.  Feel free to make suggestions for upcoming weeks in the comments for actors for me to feature here.  This week I will feature 8 time Academy Award Nominee, he finally won the honour in 1993 for his role as Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman.

I will admit before we continue that as much as I love Al Pacino’s films, I’m yet to see a lot of the supposed ‘great’ ones.  Some of those that I’ve still missing from my ‘seen’ column are: Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, Donnie Brasco and The Insider.  I’ve seen most of the others.  So this is my short preface for the list I’m about to subject you all to: (more…)

Childhood Coming Back

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Today I couldn’t help but think about my childhood.  I know that today people look at me and wonder how does someone actually become that in love in film? Well the answer to that question is through lots of practice. (more…)
