DVD Picks of the Week: Jan 24th

It’s a big week so let’s get started:

Buy It:

Classics Coming Out on Blu Ray:

Manhattan/Annie Hall/Notorious

Directed by:
Woody Allen/Woody Allen/Alfred Hitchcock

Written by: Woody Allen & Marshall Brickman/Woody Allen & Marshall Brickman/Ben Hecht

Starring: Woody Allen & Diane Keaton/Woody Allen & Diane Keaton/Cary Grant & Ingrid Bergman

Why should you buy them? They’re classics. Classics that I’d go so far – and be pretentious enough – to say that if you don’t like you should buy them and lie for the rest of your life that you love them. The two best Woody Allen films he’s ever made as well as Hitchcock‘s lesser praised masterpiece that I feel people forget about when discussing his work. I still can’t believe how much he did with a scene which was basically people walking down a stairs.

Stop reading and buy.

Rent It:

50/50

Directed by: Jonathan Levine

Written by: Will Reiser

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen & Anna Kendrick

Why should you rent it? Because laughing at cancer nowadays is the “in” thing. Didn’t you guys see Breaking Bad? Honestly it’s a good movie, some would even argue that it’s a great film. It stretches the comedic reality of life through this experience based on the writer’s own struggle with cancer and a lot of the scenes (especially those with Kendrick are great). The only problem I truly have with the film is that I doubt I’d feel the need to watch the film that much to warrant actually putting it on the shelf, but it definitely earns the special place in my heart that when the price is sub $15 I’m on it.

Real Steel

Directed by: Shawn Levy

Written by: John Gatins & Dan Gilroy

Starring: Hugh Jackman & Dakota Goyo

Why should you rent it? It’s one of those movies that while on paper doesn’t look fantastic carries the right amount of entertainment and heart to fill in that Thursday night gap with a crowd you’re not looking to offend or test mental ability with but just enjoy their company and won’t hate for not paying attention throughout the entire runtime.

It’s most important quality is that at the end of the film you’re not going to hate it. You probably won’t love it, but you definitely won’t hate it.

Skip It:

Paranormal Activity 3

Directed by: Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman

Written by: Christopher Landon & Oren Peli

Starring: Chloe Csengery & Jessica Tyler Brown

Why should you avoid it? What’s scarier? A ghost going “boo” from behind those silky smooth curtains or not knowing where the hell the damn ghost came from anyhow? I think the later, but if you immediately say the former then ignore me and go and pick up this movie – I also recommend at that point to get Casper the Friendly Ghost and make it a double feature.

The problem I have with this movie isn’t anything other than it’s the same as the first two. The direction and execution are great, but the whole plot is getting boring and with a part 4 already greenlit I’m not happy to say that this battle isn’t over yet.

The Rest

Whistleblower
Restless

Blu Ray

Godzilla (The Crieterion Collection)
The Moment of Truth (Criterion Collection)
Rebecca
Wings (1927)
Spellbound
Stripes (Extended Cut)
Stir Crazy
The Toy

Nice list, I like reading this every week.  I would add both Criterions to the buy and to at least rent the Pryor films (the Toy,See No Evil, Hear No Evil) and Stripes.  Skip the rest.  Personally I love Milo and Otis but I couldn’t recommend it if it wasn’t a childhood favorite.

Thanks so much for that comment. Was considering ending this feature due to lack of comments & reads… but now I will continue :) .

    Re: your comment :

Stripes is a definite buy for me (my favourite Ivan Reitman film; even more than Ghostbusters), but I felt I had added more than enough on my wallet this week (and I own the DVD already… so wait for a slow week for that purchase). The Criterion releases I’ve yet to see (yes I’ve never seen the original Godzilla), so they weren’t mentioned and I sort of agree with the rent for Pryor films.
