One of the biggest sales at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was “Black Dynamite,” an homage to the black exploitation movies of the ‘70’s. The movie was loud, hysterical and got the attention of Sony Pictures, which not only bought the film through their main distribution arm but also planned to turn “Black Dynamite” into a franchise for the company.

This of course sparked well deserved attention for the film in the snowy Sundance mountains of Park City, Utah where the film had played earlier. It was here where I sat down to talk to director Scott Sanders and lead actor Michael Jai White about the big sale and the prospects for the future of the series. They were both giddy and as excited as you could be after selling your film to a big distributor but the one thing I also noticed was them being very level-headed. No ego, no demands, just two artists ready to talk about their movie to the press. You don’t see that a lot after a big sale and it was a breath of fresh air during our interview together.

White and Sanders go back ten years all the way to their first collaboration together “Thick as Thieves” which also played at Sundance. Sanders directed and White had a small role in the tale of criminals turning on each other. The following audio is my interview with White and Sanders as they discuss their working relationship together, surviving Sundance and of course, “Black Dynamite.”

Black Dynamite” is now playing in limited release.
