To hear comedian Chris Rock explain it, the delicate nature of African-American women and their hair is something that isn’t shared lightly. There are trade secrets, strategies and chemical products that go into creating what can either be seen on the street as a work of art or a follicle disaster. His new documentary “Good Hair” aims to bust open the mystery behind weaves, perms and everything in between.
Traveling with a camera crew across the country Rock manages to get candid responses from people about African-American hair and how it has become a multi-million dollar business, with everything from wigs to hair products up for sale at premium prices. There are laughs, insights and even a trip to the famed Bonner Brothers hair show, a Super Bowl for hair enthusiasts whose main attraction is a yearly contest for the flashiest hair display. Fire, pyrotechnics and underwater styling are all on full display making it more of a hair circus than a hair show.
The following is an interview with Rock about the nature of hair care, the business itself and even Michelle Obama’s perm.
“Good Hair” is now playing in limited release.
