Steven Spielberg, one of the greatest directors ever, will be directing an adaptation of Harvey.  The original play was written by Mary Chase in 1944, it was then adapted into a film in 1950 starring James Stewart.

The story of the film is as follows:

An affable man Elwood P. Dowd and his imaginary friend Harvey, a six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch tall rabbit. When Elwood starts to introduce Harvey, a pooka, to guests at a society party, his society-obsessed sister, Veta, has seen as much of his eccentric behavior as she can tolerate. She decides to have him committed to a sanitarium to spare her daughter Myrtle Mae and their family from future embarrassment.

I’ve never seen the 1950 film, but for some reason I think Spielberg can do some amazing stuff with this kind of story.  Spielberg has done so many stories and topics and I don’t think I’ve ever seen him do a film where we question the existence of a character or the sanity of the protagonist.  I kind of am sorry to make this comparison, but imagine if he has directed Donnie Darko?  That may have made that movie even more awesome than it already is.

In the end this news is nothing more than a whisper for me, I will wait for more details, like who will be cast in the lead role and if there’s any particular aspect of the story that Spielberg would like to focus on or if he’s going to do a direct adaptation.  However, in the end I am happy to see another Spielberg film.

What do you think of Spielberg making Harvey?
