    Way late on commenting here but on the classic-choices, one thing to remember is the context of why people talk about the and the influence of the film.

    I watched High Noon a while back and had a similar reaction (read: Wha?) but it turns out it was actually not so much about just being a western but commentary on inaction of the time (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044706/trivia).

    With Citizen Kane, it’s really not the plot or story that is what people talk about, but the innovations in filmmaking techniques (deep focus, shooting from extremely low angles) which now is old news, but it was new then (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizen_kane).

    I see a lot of classics sight unseen and without research, but sometimes after then fact have to dig a bit to see what the fuss is about.
