I will try and make this a weekly item, where I review an Asian film, old or new, live-action or animated. And this week we get to jump things off with Ryu Ga Gotoku (Like A Dragon)

Kazuma Kiryu(Kazuki Kitamaru) has been released from prison after ten years inside. He was a part of the local Yakuza and now wishes to lead a peaceful life. He befriends this young girl Haruka(Natsuo Tomita) who wishes to find her mother. Goro Majima(Goro Kishitani) a general for the Yakuza wishes to settle a fight he has with Kiryu before he was incarcerated, and is searching the streets for him. Let the fight begin…

So apparently they (I’m not sure which studio) is making a movie to the popular comic book Witchblade which is published by Top Cow Productions. The franchise has already spawned a TV Show on TNT which premiered back in 2001 and an Anime by GONZO studio. I personally have had no interaction with any of this material (comic/tv/anime).

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is approached by Mutt Williams (Shia LeBeouf) with information that an old colleague of years past Professor Oxley (John Hurt) has been captured by the Russians while on the search for the Golden City of Akator. Indy and Mutt (yes Mutt) run off to save him and Mutt’s mother from whoever or whatever has them in the Amazon jungle.

Quentin Tarantino was interviewed at Cannes recently. And even though I do not speak french if you listen you can hear Quentin speaking in English under the French translation dub. He talks about all sorts of things from how he goes along his process of music selection, his success of Pulp Fiction at Cannes years ago, and even how he would shoot the interview if he was the director. I’m not a big fan of posting up posters and all, but recently I’ve noticed a lot of really cool posters being tossed around the net, and here are some of my favourite…

Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes), rightful heir to the Telmarine throne, flees his kingdom in fear of being killed as King Miraz (Sergio Castellitto), Caspian’s Uncle, wishes to take control of the throne. Prince Caspian escapes to the land of Narnia where he calls back our four heroes from the previous film, Peter (William Moseley), Susan (Anna Popplewell), Edmund (Skandar Keynes) and Lucy (Georgie Henley). The Kings and Queens of Narnia return to their land to see that it is in complete ruins and its people suffering. Narnia now wages war against the Telmarine regime to bring their lands back to what it once was, alongside Prince Caspian who wishes to reclaim his rightful place in his own kingdom.

Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is a young talented driver who is beginning to get attention in the media as the next best thing on the race track. He is approached by Royalton (Roger Allam), who wants to buy out Racer Motors and become Speed’s sponsor. Speed declines the deal only to be threatened by Royalton on how he can’t win without his sponsorship. The movie then becomes a race for Speed to prove Royalton wrong and expose him for the cheat he is.

Prof. Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey) pulls together a team of students to beat the Vegas casinos at blackjack (aka. 21) by running a simple team card counting system. Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess), a promising MIT student, who becomes very visible in the Prof’s math lecture, receives an invitation into this profiting math club. Ben and the rest of the squad go through a semester of life in Vegas every Saturday/Sunday and then the rigours of MIT school life during the Mon-Fri, while trying not to let the cat out of the bag that they make from five to two hundred thousand dollars every weekend.

Speed Racer premiers tomorrow in the Box Office, and even though this is supposed to be the Wachowski’s next best thing and huge addition to the world of film, I think Iron Man will still trounce it and it wont break 150Million gross. (more…)
